Who are Joe’s Tea Co?

Good question. My name’s on the box but there’s a wealth of expertise within our team that should get all the credit. The main part of our team is based at our factory’s back office in Sri Lanka. Our team there supports with sourcing, blending and packing of products and then our sales and marketing team is based in the UK.

A special mention to Dimali that makes the business tick. I believe our team has 150 combined years of experience within the tea industry and that’s not a typo. They are legends.

What makes your tea different?

From the start, my vision was to curate a range of teas and herbal infusions that had a point of difference to the market with a simple idea of making good tea accessible.

We source all our teas from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) due to their delicate floral character. This alone gives us a difference as 70-80% of the teas in the UK market are blended with Indian and African teas with taste profiles which you would associate with the humble British cuppa.

Along with this, all our teas are organic and directly sourced from small hold farms where we purchase above fair trade price. This is much more important than a nice-cuppa story for us to tell, it ensures that the business model for every partner in the supply chain is economically sustainable and future-proofed.

We love that you’re big on sustainability! Can you tell us how you strive to make your brand as eco-friendly as possible?

Organic farming has always been at the heart of what we do and we have only ever traded 100% organic teas and herbal infusions. Why are we so passionate about it? Because organic farming is the only way to ensure that our planet is properly looked after through agriculture for the present and the future. Our ingredients are chemical-free (fertilisers, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides) which keeps the ecosystems around the teas, herbs and spices as natural and happy as possible

Earlier this year we became certified carbon neutral with The Sri Lankan Climate Fund and this year all product lines will go totally plastic-free and certified by A Plastic Planet

It’s always been important to support our farmers, we’ve done it from the start and will continue to. We source all of our tea and as much of our other ingredients as possible, from Sri Lanka, and fully support the farmers who are vital to our business.

We aim to ensure they can manage demand and growth within the business. We have done this by initiating several projects partnering with our organic suppliers, spread throughout the country. These farmers work hard to produce the best quality organic products without the use of chemical fertilisers and often through difficult climatic seasons, particularly drought. We work across multiple projects to help our suppliers increase the volume and quality of their production, thereby growing their own businesses which in turn secures our relationships and supply chain for the future.

What’s your favourite tea?

Our Queen of Green is delicious - grassy, light and refreshing - brewed at 80 degrees to stop the leaves from being scaled and add a slice of lemon. Perfect.

What’s the best thing about running your own tea company?

I’ve always loved the sentiment of taking time out for a cup of tea with a friend or family member and it’s those simple moments that are important and it’s wonderful to hear from customers that do exactly that over a cup of our tea.

I’m also very proud to be able to provide a quality service that has been called upon especially over the last 18 months when times have been tough for many. This has felt amazing. It’s given myself and the team a real sense of purpose and togetherness, and if the pandemic has taught us anything then that is to be grateful. We have great customers, partners and an incredible team which all in their own way have pulled together and supported the business. That is a special feeling of purpose that means a lot.

What are your plans for the future of Joe's Tea Co?

Joe’s Tea will be 9 years old this year and over that time we’ve forged great relationships and solid foundations and I still have the same passion when I started. Later this year we have a new range of plastic-free loose leaf retail products which will be launching on Mighty Small and the journey continues…
