Practical tips for going vegan this Veganuary!

What is Veganuary?

Launched in January 2014, Veganuary is described as the world’s largest vegan movement, with over 400,000 people taking part in 2020! Participants make the pledge to go vegan for the month of January and the campaign helps to inspire people to make the dietary change permanently, whilst also encouraging shops and restaurants to be more inclusive of veganism.

At Mighty Small we’re proud to cater for those who eat a plant-based diet and so, we thought we’d share a round up of our top tips and products to help those taking part this year!

1. Find a non-dairy milk you like 

With such a range of dairy free milks now on offer, it can feel a little daunting when trying to choose! Popular options often include soya, almond and oat - it’s just about finding one suited to you.

Soya, almond and oat milk all make good alternatives to have in tea and we also love to add them into our porridge for a healthy vegan breakfast that tastes indulgent and creamy!

If the usual suspects aren’t for you, try a more exotic option! Cashew milk is delicious if you’re after a sweet and nutty taste but don’t like almonds, and coconut is perfect if you want a plant-milk that is light, yet flavourful.

For the coffee lovers out there, be sure to find a barista style alternative too, regular plant-milks aren’t ideal for steaming, so we recommend trying a specialised option like the Moma Oat Barista style, to achieve the perfect froth at home.

2. Get your protein in

When transitioning to veganism, it’s important to incorporate plant-based protein sources into your diet. These high protein foods will not only keep you feeling more satisfied after your meals, you’ll stay fuller for longer! The best vegan protein sources include: seitan, tofu, nutritional yeast, lentils, chickpeas, soy milk, oats, chia seeds, nuts & nut butters.

3. Plan your meals

Preparation is key if you want to succeed at a dietary change! Meal planning will help you stay on track over the month, it’s also beneficial for budgeting and will encourage you to eat healthier plant-based meals.

Stocking up on basic vegan cupboard staples is the best place to start. For breakfast we love topping blueberry and banana instant oats with nut butter and chia seeds, or simply adding almond and apple low sugar granola to a plant-based yoghurt. For a hearty, high protein vegan lunch idea, this smokey black bean chilli does the trick! Vegan dinners can always be spiced up with the flavours of Latin America - our favourites include a cumin and chipotle fajita seasoning and the Brazilian smoked paprika packet.

4. Stock up on snacks

Don’t forget to think about vegan friendly snacks! Plant-based food on the go is just as important as a regular meal. Luckily, at Mighty Small, we offer more than just the option of fruit...although a banana is great when you’re on the move!
