An interview with Shane Ryan, founder of fiid!

With all of the stresses of modern-day life, it's completely normal to have those days when cooking feels like a chore. Luckily, Fiid have come to the rescue by creating quick and easy plant-based meals to enjoy on those days when time is disappearing.

We interviewed Shane Ryan, founder of Fiid, to see where the vision for his brand came from, as well as learning about his experience running a start-up business.

How did you come to create fiid?

I was hungry and couldn’t find the type of food that I like to eat (natural, veggie-centric and convenient). In hindsight there were definitely easier ways to make sure I always had a delicious meal on hand but I’d be lying if I said that the journey hasn’t been incredibly rewarding

What makes fiid so unique?

We’re a brand with a whole lot of empathy. We totally get that everyone has those days that they don’t have the time, energy or interest to scratch cook and that’s ok. That’s why we exist.

What are you most proud of with the business?

There’s so much I’m proud of. I’m proud that I get to work with a group of incredible people every day that I love spending time with. I’m proud that we’ve helped hundreds of thousands of people all over the world eat healthy food easily. I’m proud that we’ve donated over half a million school meals to children in developing countries. I’m proud that I stuck with it when everyone told me to give up.

What is particularly hard behind the scenes that most people may not realise?

Particularly as a founder, you need to be good at between 7 and 10 jobs that in a more established business would have people looking after them specifically. You’re constantly context shifting between supply chain, marketing, sales, production and that’s all before lunch time. It’s exhausting and can really take its toll on a founder if it’s not managed.

Who do you look up to in the food & drink startup world?

I have a huge amount of admiration for Sam Dennigan from Strong Roots and what he’s built. It’s an incredible story and a brand that is doing such amazing things but at the core, it’s all about the customer and making eating veggies easier for them and the journey that they’ve been on is something that I’d love to emulate for fiid.

Any top tips for business success?

Check your ego at the door, listen to everyone and be open to changing the original plan.

What's next for Fiid?

We’ve learned so much about our customers this year - how they live, how they interact with fiid and what meals look like in the new world. We’re excited to continue creating solutions that help everyone make every meal time memorable.
